Marty Pell Keyboards and vocals
Marty Pell has been playing the music of the Grateful Dead for over 20 years, and has been a member of On The Bus since 2007. His roots run deep in the music of the 60’s – rock and roll as well as jazz and blues. In San Francisco, he was a founding member of the legendary Fallen Angel, and played in many other projects as well, including world beat bands Unruly World and The Rhythomatics. He also helped form the seminal acid jazz fusion group, Periphery, in New Jersey in 1978, before moving the whole band to San Francisco the following year.
Marty is an experienced engineer as well as a musician and has played and recorded with many bands and projects in studios on both coasts, most recently here in the DC area. His fiery solos and tasteful accompaniments on the organ and piano lend spirit and depth to any project he’s involved with. As a member of the Grateful Dead tribute band, On the Bus, his piano playing recalls the technical proficiency and jazz influences of Keith Godchaux while his organ playing brings to mind the emotional intensity of Dead founding member Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, and the musical complexities of ‘80s keyboardist, Brent Mydland. Marty is a driving force in On The Bus when it comes to keeping the music authentically “Dead-like” and musically accurate.
Marty plays an array of keyboards which includes a Yamaha CP-33 digital stage piano, a Hammond XK-1 organ, and his newest addition, a colorful Korg M50, all channeled through a Roland KC-550 keyboard amplifier.
Just as symphony orchestras pay tribute to classical composers, Grateful Dead tribute bands around the globe help keep the spirit, vibe and community of the Dead alive and thriving...
